An early spring morning. In the first light of dawn, a large, dark brown shinlai lay rested at the bank of a shallow pool. His fluorescent markings were rapidly changing from bright blue to a dull gray as the sun got brighter. A yawn escaped him and made him stretch his large jaws, showing his uneven teeth. How long had he been sleeping? It never even seemed enough. The pain that had been there since Feyverne left had been dulled, not healed. Every breath he took she was there in the back of his mind.

He truly was feeling Melancholic, Phlorian mused to himself. His heavy paws hung in the water, making it ripple and wave. A good word, melancholic. A feeling to drown in. With a heavy sigh, he flopped to his side. Swirls of fog clung to his fur like silk and he briefly enjoyed himself by blowing them away and watch them move. Soon though the same heavynes of mind came over him again. Today was going to be another day wasted.

Viva's large mass thudded to the ground as she attempted to scratch at her new scars just bellow her jaw.

She would never have thought in all her years of fighting, that she would get her first scars from an allie. A fellow Light Shinlai no less!
What she really needed was some water, to sooth the itching and pain.

With a heavy sigh, Viva drew in her breath and grew still. Her ears might have been snatched from her at birth, but her hearing was still capable of pin pointing the general direction of water; natures way of keeping big critters like lai alive, she supposed.

With a snap the giant maroon female bounded to her feet and stampeded towards an opening where she now knew water ran.

It was so nice and calming. The soft lapping of the water against his claws, the melodic chirping of the birds... Spending your years this way wasn't so bad. Phlorian was just getting ready to submerge all his 15 feet of furry mass into an emotional lake of self-pity as a soft thudding sound caught his attention. A slight bubble of annoyance crept up in his stomach, but he quickly surpressed it. There was no need for letting himself be distracted now. It probably was a tree falling in the damned forest. A very rhytmical tree that was. With a sigh, the lai lifted his head. Yep, that was definetely something quadrupal approaching.

Although no one was around to see it, he lifted his heavy body as theatracally as possible with much emphasis on the emotional struggle. The whole world seemed to press on his shoulders. For a second, Phlorian imagined himself standing on a high rock, looking out over a vast wasteland with the ash-ridden wind rustling through his fur. Then a shape started appearing in the mist and his dream-image quickly crumbled. The lai sniffed once. It seemed as if he was going to get some company.

Viva leapted into the open and hurdled towards the water. She could practically smell it now as she raced over a small hill. Her excitement grew to surprise, sending all four of her massive paws to a sharp stop.

A few feet away stood a large brown lai. Viva's eyes opened wide in surprise; although with her mask, it wasn't easy to show any change in emotion. It had been years since she had seen a lai larger then herself. The spring air put her in a cheery mood and she slunk towards the male, her short tail lowered submissively.

"Woww!" She chirped,"You're huge!!"

She very nearly forgot about her itching, until now. She groaned loudly and threw her face to the dirt, dragging her jaw along the ground. The scratching feeling of the rocks bellow felt amazing on her skin, ripping open her scabs leaving blood trailing.

With surprise, Phlorian took in the other lai. Quite tall, though not as tall as he was himself, and with enormous antlers that seemed to be engulfed in light, it was quite a sight to behold. The female, as he believed it was, walked towards him in a fittingly submissive manner, but completely ruined it by blurting out a "Woww! You're huge!!", followed by her throwing her head against the ground and somehow smearing it with blood.

"Speak of yourself, lady," Phlorian replied with some disdain. This female obviously wasn't very reserved and right now she was not only ruining the beautiful melancholy of his lonely morning: she was destroying the location in which he had meant to spend it as well. Nonetheless, the large male felt some curiousity. It wasn't every day that he met someone with an appearance quite like this. The blue lights in particular were interesting to him and he spent a few moments trying to discern what they were. Eventually, he gave up.

"So sorry to disturb you, but what are those?"

Blood dripping down her chin, Viva rolled over on back.

"So sorry to disturb you, but what are those?"

Viva perked up hearing the male's question, and was confused by it. Her large antlers forced her to look down when she lay on her back, and because of this she had no idea to what this male was referring to. She rolled over, onto her fluffy stomach and realized what he was directing to.

"Fireflies!" She chimed, matter-of-factly. "These fireflies follow me around and nest on my antlers. I make shine blue instead of yellow. I like blue better then yellow. It's brighter at night and easier to see during the day."

She smiled, proud of her little buggers. Soon, the itching returned and Viva smiled a toothy grin at the site of the water her acquaintance stood in. Excitedly, she threw herself into it, splashing water everywhere. Turning in circle within the water, much like a dog would to settle a place to sleep, Viva marched and marched until she plopped herself down into the shallow water.

"Fireflies. Right," Phlorian grumbled as the female splashed right into his pool. While it wasn't precisely his pool, he still felt very much protective of it. First, he tried to show her his discontent by looking discontent, but as that not seemed to work out the male shifted to more direct methods.

"Well, excuse me lady-with-the-fireflies. You are bloodying my pond."

Despite himself, the brown lai felt somewhat impressed. Normally, everyone was immediately intimidated by his size. Being treated with so much cheerful disrespect was almost... Refreshing. He decided to dislike refreshing.

Viva sat cheerfully in the pool, her head raised. Now having been soaked in water, she was all but refreshed and felt positively amazing!
She glanced towards the taller Shinlai beside her and noticed an all but disgruntled look. Viva, surprised, realized she didn't fit in with this new lai.

*You're much too cheerful* She told herself. She looked forward, puffed herself up, and let her smile fade to a grim hateful look.

Apparently, it didn't work, because a deep voice beside her grumbled,"Well, excuse me lady-with-the-fireflies. You are bloodying my pond."


Viva looked down sadly. She realized, as the water turned a pale red around her, that she had in fact ruined the water with her injury. Obviously, this lai would be upset. Being covered in blood was not a pleasant thing at all. At least, that's what Taggerung had told her about other lai. Being covered in blood was something of a sport for her and her old friend.

When they saw each other... she sighed heavily at the thought.

Perking up, she pressed one large paw against her bleeding jaw and pressed it against the big lai's shoulder; leaving a perfect red paw print. With a very cranky look she looked up at the male and remarked," Excuse me sir, but I believe YOU are the source of the blood."

She pointed towards the red mark with the best poker face she could muster, acting very disgusted.

" Excuse me sir, but I believe YOU are the source of the blood."

"The... What?" he said, absolutely baffled. The way this lai acted was entirely strange to him. Sure, some were unpredictable like the crazy, mentally fragmented darkblood that had attacked him that one time, but that was a kind of crazy he could react to. But this female. Suddenly, Phlorian realised what she had done: she had put a perfectly bloody pawprint on him and with a very unmanly yelp he jumped and tried to wash it of with the water, only to realise he was only worsening matters.

"There is something wrong with you." It wasn't as much as an accusation as an announcement. The other didn't seem in any way aware of behavioural rules. As his thoughts shifted to this lady sitting in his pond like she owned the place, Phlorian got very disgruntled again. Maybe a very mad glare would help. He glared with all his might as he announced:

"You need to go away. That is my pond."

Viva, who had yet to look back at the male in his shuffle acted quite baffled by all the hate," I am APPALLED!" She cried, sarcasism dripping from her words,"You come stampeding into MY pond, fill with filthy blood and now you claim it as your own?!"

She laughed aloud at the joke she thought was quite funny, and abruptly placed her head just bellow the water; and promptly began to blow bubbles.

Mornings always put her in such an uncharacteristically good mood.

"I dislike you." He was hoping that his grave tone of voice would convince this crazy lady to leave. Phlorian really didn't want to give up on his pond just yet. It was very nice pond, although a little bloody right now. Maybe if he stepped on her head for a bit, that would be likely to tick her of enough to dislike him too. And then she would leave.

Very conveniently, right at that moment the other lai flopped her head underwater and started bubbling around. Gladly seizing this oppurtunity, Phlorian took a massive leap into the pond and firmly placed a paw on her head. His nails tinked against her metal mask, so he assumed it didn't really hurt anyway. And while he was there, he took the oppurtunity to dip his shoulder under, debloodying it a bit.

Viva giggled delighted as the bubbles popped and splashed, when a shadow crept over. The male raised one paw, and before she could react her head and being shoved under the water. She stopped blowing her bubbles.

Heat began to cook up inside her body as she gripped the bottom of the pond with her strong feet. She was all for fun and games, but this. She growled under the water, sending a massive amount of bubbles rising to the surface. THIS she did not like.

Her strong muscles clenched under the pressure of the water, moving slower then she meant them too. She always hated moving in water, and this only frustrated her further.

With a great heave Viva pushed herself out of the water and clawed at the brown male. She roared aggressively, her sharp fangs glinting in the morning sun as she pinned the male down in a flash of claws and heavy muscle.

Him pinned beneath her, she drew back a breath and roared in his face. When she finished she stood above him breathing in and out heavily, glaring down onto him. Water and blood dripped passed him into the grass.

One second he had been pushing her under water. The next the crazy lady was standing over him and roaring in his face. His mane rustled in the wind by the force as Phlorian cowered under her. The quite disgusting mixture of blood, mud and pond water dripped of his quite unwanted aquintance. Her bared teeth were glistening eerily in the blue light of the fireflies and all in all she looked pretty terrifying. Phlorian saw only one way out.

"GREAT DAILA PLEASE LET ME LIVE" he shrieked out, very unbrave. He knew that and however much he hated it, he couldn't help it. Since the other didn't immediately attack him he dared to put his hind legs against her belly and give a firm push. That should at least get her face somewhat further away.

Viva dug her claws into the ground and the male tried to throw her off with his back legs. Though larger, he did not have the same strength as she did; certainly not enough to move her when she did not want to move. When it came to sheer brute force, there could be no better teacher then Taggerung. She thanked him quickly in her head, and sneered down at the cowardly Shinlai," Why in the bloody Elaisha would you try to drown me?!" She yelled, pressing her mask against his.

She could feel her anger growing inside her, as it often did. She was still so used to being along side Taggerung, that it never accured to her that acting like a pup before strangers was a bad idea. He had always been there to snag her out of situations she created for herself. The feeling that stabbed through her chest so abruptly made her sit back just before this new lai.

It had never hit her until now, that she was truly alone. He had said when he left, that he would be back in a matter of days, and yet here she sat, months later, so very alone.

Her anger fell from her body as she moped at the thought.

"You're lucky Tagger isn't here," she barked," He would have stamped you into the ground for sure."

Sadly, shoving her only resulted in his feet meeting a carpet of fur. The female seemed extremely unimpressed by this. Before he knew it, her face was against his, their masks colliding with a loud bang. The sheer force of her anger made Phlorian's horns press into the ground as the furry mountain over him shouted: ,"Why in the bloody Elaisha would you try to drown me?!" Slightly, confused, Phlorian shoved again. Luckily, the other decided to let him go and Phlorian quickly flailed around until he was right up again.

"I wasn't trying to drown you," the large male mumbled. He felt somewhat flustered. Nowhere in their conversation he had meant to cause the other harm and her extreme reaction had surprised him. Usually, people didn't shout at him in this manner and he had no idea what to do. "You're lucky Tagger isn't here," the other lai barked at him. "He would have stamped you into the ground for sure."

"Oh, why don't you just do that yourself, hmm? You were already halfway there," Phlorian bit back at her. He was truly getting annoyed by this female now.

Viva wasn't even mad enough to growl at the male any more.

She just hung her head and pouted. "You're a meanie" she stated, throwing a rock in his direction. Though, she didn't follow it through, and wasn't sure where it landed at all.

Blood dripped lazily from her chin as she scratched it lamely. She was so alone.

"You're a meanie"

All of a sudden, all her tough demeanor had vanished. A rock halfheartedly flew in his direction, but it fell short, making a soft thud on the ground. The other lai let her head hang. Even the fireflies seemed to droop a litte. A pang of guilt sprang in his chest. Maybe he had been too stern with the female. Maybe she had just lost her favourite firefly and maybe he was only making her feel worst, Phlorian thought.

Not quite sure what to do with himself, he walked towards her and lightly nudged her shoulder. He cleared his throat and looked away. "Well fine, you can use my pond."

While the young shinlai was indeed still sad; she really did want to play in the pond. With a grunt, she swung ehr fluffy back legs upwards and pushed her front half towards the pond. She imagined she looked very foolish, but at the moment it wasn't a concern.

A lazy splash hit the serounding grass as she dumped her large mass into the pond; turning half heartedly so she stick her face out and breath. Her eyes laid themselves on the big monotone colored male and let loose the tiniest of smiles.

"I suppose, you're only a little bit of a meanie."

She scratched her chin with a pondering look and whispered," I have a secret... can I tell you?"

He had to give it this female, Phlorian thought. She sure was odd and crazy, but she also didn't fear him. Which was a nice change from all the other things that naturally tended to be intimidated. Somewhat surprised, the large lai watched as the other drag herself back to the pond in a very unappealing manner and flop back in.

She smiled at him ever so slightly, which was confusing, but also made him smile back ever so little. "I have a secret... can I tell you?"

Phlorian sighed, a little sad. "No. I am leaving." With another, heavier sigh he scrambled to his feet. "Enjoy the pond, I will go look for another."

Viva's head tilted to the side as the big male turned to leave.

She huffed,"My name is Viva, by the way." She hoped it would at least make the male stop, if not let her follow him.

Why do I want to follow him anyway? She thought to herself. He wasn't brave like Taggerung; she recalled this clearly, remembering the squeaky sounds he made when she charged him. He's squeamish of blood, and no fun at all, like Taggerung was.

Why was she even comparing him to Tagger anyway? Stop it brain! She yelled into her head. Tagger is the one for me! So why did her eyes not turn away when he did?

A small growl curled from her lips, and yet... she followed his large frame as he stood away from her. It was rare to find any lai bigger then herself; and she had to admit, she did like that.

She supposed his silence had it's own charm.

"My name is Viva, by the way."

The large male's paws landed heavily on the earth with every step he took. Why exactly was he walking away again? This Viva seemed not too bad. But then he remembered Fey and how much he had liked her and how it had never worked out and how the world was never going to be good again.

A small growl behind him caught his attention. He tried to turn his massive head stealthily to see what was happening. The other had emerged from the pond again and was now catching up. Utterly confused, Phlorian stopped dead in his tracks.

"What are you doing? I thought you wanted the pond?"
