Battle on the Plains

Hey guys! Alana and Rose here to start up a new roleplay!


Here are the rules and warnings (YES WARNINGS) to this roleplay…


1. This IS a fighting zone, and as forewarning, both Brute and Lycu will be in the area. These Shinlai are both very aggressive and can cause serious damage to a Shinlai. However, no one will be killed or broken in anyway. Just expect a shanking… or two.

2. Factions are WELCOMED. That’s the beauty of the Shinlai world, we have conflict!

3. Elites are WELCOMED. BRING IT RONDUN.

4. Please remain ACTIVE and please refrain from being TOO ACTIVE. Yes, there is such a thing. Wait for other people to post, don’t let someone fall too behind in the roleplay. It can get confusing…

5. Remember, Shinlai have ENERGY but it does not last forever. Your Shinlai is not a never ending flamethrower, we all have our limits.

Setting: The area is a scrub/savanna with the largest prey, Rhino and Hippo, largest carnivore, Lion, and smallest herbivores (SHINLAI SNACKS) different types of Gazelle. No Elephants, giraffes. The area is mostly flat, with scattered brush. Heat is high, water is low.

The sun had settled itself high in the sky, its rays of heat shining relentlessly on the plains below. The clouds were few and too little to bring drops of relief to the praying animals below, and the trees offered little shade to the beggars at their feet. However, despite the heat, a few found it rather… exciting.

The rhino foolishly stumbled its way out into the field, its large body swaying as it moved forward, and its heavy feet crushing the plants beneath it. It snorted and lowered its large head, the massive horn on its snout glistening in the sun. He began to pick at the grass while he swatted the flies from his rump with his small tail, the muscles in his flank quivering at his movement.

And his hunter watched with hunger.

The large Shinlai crept low to the ground, careful not to let the beast see her. She knew she could catch him if he ran, and she knew she could take him if he charged. This was nothing but a game to her. Glancing to the side, she spotted her wingman, his stance similar to hers. Smaller than her, he could get closer to the rhino without it spotting him. But she wanted the beast.

She gathered her haunches, eyes narrowed on the prize before her, and summoned a roar from deep within. Springing to life, the female charged forth from the brush that concealed her, the rhino whirling to face the sudden crashing of noise and stampeding feet. The beast wheezed, turned, and broke into a run, the sounds of heavy, racing footsteps echoing around them.

Roaring, the large female called to the other Shinlai, "He's going for the trees! Cut him off, now, Lycu!"

The sun sweltered down on his back, making his fur feel close and uncomfortable. He should have gotten it trimmed. But he didn’t like humans with their sharp pointy sticks. And neither did he like Shinlai trying to groom him, which probably explained his rather dusty state. He shook his neck, trying to cool off and scare away the flies.

It didn’t work.

With a quite grumble to himself he continued stalking forwards. The Large bumbling animal not far ahead of him, was munching on the short tough grass. He pulled a face, how they could eat that stuff he, didn’t know.

He glanced around, his bright orange eyes easily spotting the large form of Brute not far away. She was bracing to charge. As she burst forth with a deep roar, Lycu kicked up his heals and streaked after the beast as well. His slender frame moved easily, a faint breeze almost egging him on.

"He's going for the trees! Cut him off, now, Lycu!" The large female Shinlai yelled at him.

“On it Brute!” He roared back at her.

The faint breeze turned into a gust, propelling him faster and faster. He soon overtook the large rhino, and began arching around towards it. His gloved footpaws a flurry of brown leather and silver fur as he ran at the rhino, roaring loudly, his voice amplified by his Element.

The rhino turned, no longer heading for the trees. Lycu made sure to stay on the side of the trees. Blocking its escape. Orange eyes flicking around, looking for Brute.

Brute raced after the rhino, gaining lenghts as it kept its straight path to the trees. She knew she couldn't fit in there, her long, swooping horns would probably catch in a tree, and that could get messy. However; Lycu moved quickly in front of the charging beast and sent in careening in another direction.

She growled and cut her turn short, flanking the rhino and gaining speed as it tried to escape.

"You're mine."

Summoning herself, she propelled herself a few more lenghts before launching into the air. With claws outstretched and fangs glistening, Brute landed on top of the rhino, digging her claws into its rough hide as the two went down into the earth. Crashing into the earth, she struggled to keep her grip on the rhino, and when they rolled again, Brute was thrown from her prey and landed with a heavy thud!

Bewildered, Brute tried to regain her footing and check to see if the rhino would charge, "Enough playtime," she growled, spotting the rhino several yards away trying to stand back up, "let's finish this."

Halfway across the plain, beneath the shade of a large acacia tree, Deston rest blissfully with his new found 'companion' Nootau who had seemed to run in to him this morning as he tracked after Lycu and Brute. Deston raised his head in a yawn when he heard some skirmish in the distance, he narrowed his eyes to the figures in the distance, two shinlai, apparently after something. Deston glanced over at the young one who slept belly up, almost cat like if you will. He couldn't avoid but let out a light chuckle, before turning his attention back towards the hunters.

Conner had no idea why he and Lyle were in this land.

Lyle had stated that there was a client who wanted some kind of rock from the idea to be made into a necklace for his wife. The blacksmith, himself, didn't want to be in the continental savannah ether. The area was as dangerous place to be for a small pink shinlai and his human friend.

They had stopped near a pool of water to rest for a minute. Mineral hunting was hard work in the sun. Conner himself stretched out a bit on the dry grass.

Lyle was perched over the water, checking a sheet of paper for the best deposits of the mineral. Conner glanced at Lyle and began to speak.

"So, Lyle, how long are we going to have to be in this Cerexan-forsaken heat?" Conner stated.

Lyle looked over and furrowed his eyes a bit. "I want to get back to the mountains as much as the next guy, but the client from Riversmeet has paid a buttload of gold to us. We'll be out of here before it gets too ugly."

Marrinus rolled over onto his elbows, the comfortable warmth of the exposed slab of rock he had been lounging on turning uncomfortably hot beneath his skin. As the sun ascended, the heat of the day bared its teeth onto the scorched dry earth of the plains, and the arid atmosphere dried up any moisture the savannah could suffice.

He rose to his feet and stretched, his sharpened claws scraping jaggedly against the flat rock’s surface as he eased back. Straightening, Marrinus tilted his head to the side at the sound of a familiar roar off in the distance.

“Sounds like Brute and Lycu have found their prey,” he said smiling, his eyes squinting to see the large dark shapes darting across the plains on the horizon. Looking around, the Dark Shinlai noted the presence of more Shinlai in the area. He snorted, “What? The sun comes out and they all show up?”

Trotting forward, his gaze set, Marrinus focused intently on the ensuing struggle and headed towards his allies. “Not that they’d share,” he thought haughtily, “But they’d need someone to watch their asses while Brute stuffs her face.”

Brute lunged forward, kicking up dust in her heavy steps as she closed the distance between her and the now standing rhino. She charged into the side of the rhino, throwing her impressive horns into its side and knocking into the ground, rolling it until its throat and belly lay exposed before her.

She thrust her paw upon its stomach, her claws gripping and piercing the hide with the crimson drops of blood glistening in the sun. The rhino continued to scream, writing beneath her, but was cut short when Brute gripped its neck in her gaping jaws and gave it a mighty yank, crraaanch!

With the rhino motionless beneath her, Brute released her prey and tasted the blood on her tounge, growling in satisfaction at the salty, yet sweet tang. "Nothing like it," she almost purred. Tossing her head to the sun, she let out a deep bellow, claiming her prize on the savanna plain.

Ahaloh purred lazily in his sleep, curled up in the scrub. The hot desolate climate was his comfort zone and nothing pleased him more than to take a nap, the full heat of the sun warming his thick fur. For the most part he was concealed by the scraggly bushes but his presence was made know when his head shot up, listening to the racket being created. Something large was either fighting or being hunted. He scanned the distance which was fairly easy to do, thanks to the flat open nothingness the dread plains brought.

He spotted two shinlai attacking and hunting a rhino and was slightly impressed to say the least. Their prowess after their quarry brought a slight smile to his face. He wasn't sure who exactly they were but thought nothing of it as he stretched slightly before rolling back over onto his side. A few pesky biting flies landed on his flank as he grumbled and swatted at them. However curiosity got the best of him and he wondered why the shinlai he had spotted had decided on such vicious prey. He kept his head a bit low and continued to watch them.

The largest had almost easily taken her victim and the screech echoed across the plains. "I understand the love of the hunt but this one absolutely bathes in the glory of the kill..." He thought to himself. It sent a small shiver along his spine that someone would glorify and delight in such violence.

The pair of mammalian males knew that wandering around the plains was a bad idea this time of year. Conner and Lyle kept to the edge of the region as much as they could, but the demand for the hard to find macguffin made it so that they had to go deeper into the savannah .

Lyle watched tepidly around the landscape as Conner sniffed out some roots to put into the stew Lyle had been making. Lunch was never something they were keen to miss. In the distance, Lyle could have shown he saw a large Shinlai...doing something. Conner seemed to take note of Lyle's face.

"There something going on?" Conner said in an aiding tone.

Lyle kept his eyes ahead, "I think there's a big shinlai in the area, and I get the feeling it's bad news."

Conner took note of the feeling. He'd much rather go the other direction than stay. "I think we should stay in this spot until further notice. The grass is tall enough that no one will catch immediately. " Lyle cast Conner a concerned look, the southern Shinlai was usually cracking jokes and going on about food. It felt disturbing to hear such serious words from him.

Lycu bounced back a step when Brute was flung from the rhino, but moments latter Brute was back on her feet and attacking the rhino again. There wasn't much he could do other than avoid the flailing limbs and horns. Non the less, he was impressed when Brute finally managed to kill the writhing animal. She let out a proud roar over the kill.

He padded towards her and he kill bobbing his head up and down in acknowledgement of her skills. "Impressive." He said quietly. Lowering his head to sniff at the facial horn of the rhino. "Not many could take down that tank of an animal." He said looking up at her, a faint smile on his lips.

A dark shape moving towards them made him perk up alertly. His eyes narrowed as he focused in on the other Shinlai. He sent a breeze sweeping towards them, recognizing the scent on the wind. "Marrinus is here." He purred. Although he fell silent as a few more scents caught his attention, he only recognized one though. "Fuzzbutt..." He muttered, frowning as he tried to recall where he knew the smell from. He remembered a huge old church and a storm... And Linx... A small brief smile flashed across his face at the thought of her. He glanced at the blood stained Brute, and awkwardly shuffled, before sitting down and wrapping his tail around his feet.

Keeping low in the grass Riya so close to the earth she felt as if she could feel the footsteps of the many shinlai tromping around, she could barely see through the grass with it waving around so she poked her head up a bit after hearing a huge roar. Seeing now that two shinlai had just taken a huge Rhino as there prey they were quite pleased Riya did feel sorry for the creature in the unfairness of that hunt seeing the one atop it was massive.

Turning her head slightly she caught a glimpse of the dark shinlai she met on the ice slinking slowly towards them. She knew he must be going trying to get in on some of that meat, but she wondered what he may be doing otherwise. Crouching down again she decided to follow him slowy to see what might else go besides choking down a rhino. Close behind she stopped seeing the smaller shinlai next to the Rhino perk up he must know that either she or his friend is close stopping for a moment may be good, and maybe she was even close enough.

Brute purred when Lycu began to praise her for the kill, "Not many could take down that tank of an animal." She grinned and looked down upon the rhino, his eyes still open and jaw agape. Rolling the rhino back over to its belly and removing herself from on top, she paced around to the front of the carcass and pawed the large horn of the rhino.

She grinned, "This would make a fine trophy..." Brute said, almost to herself. But before she could try to remove the horn, Lycu spoke up.

"Marrinus is here."

Brute glanced up to see the dark figure of Marrinus approaching, wading through the tall grass, with his cold eyes glancing between her, Lycu, and the kill. She growled and looked back down at her prize, "He better not touch my horn..." She placed her paw onto its forehead and cocked her head. "In fact, let's try this-"

Placing her weight onto her paw, Brute crushed the skull beneath her, cruuuunch!

She laughed when the sounds of tissue made all sorts of undescribable noises, "That's disgusting!"

A decision was made to move to a place that had more cover. Lyle packed up the last of his stew and placed on the saddle bag on Conner's flank.

"We can head more towards the wild parts, there might be a few more critters running around there. At least you might get to hunt a bit." Conner said to the slightly sleepy human. Lyle himself nodded and he gestured for Conner to lie down so that he could get on the saddle. He lifted himself up onto it and fastened a sort of belt the edge of the saddle. Conner looked around the area and got onto his feet. It was going to be a while before there got the taller grasses.

Nootau came to a snort and jolt himself awake "mhngg...wha-what did I miss?" he yawned, watching Deston upside down
"Nothing much, apparently a group of two shinlai seemed to have taken down a rhino" he explained.
Nootau sniffed the air, to no avail considering they were downwind. he got up with a stretch and squint "With a pair of horns like that....yep, that's Brute alright" he muttered his stomach growled "mm...I wonder if she'll share" he whined.

Deston picked himself up as well "Brute? Never heard of her."
"She's a Darkblood Elite" Nootau said proudly "C'mon, let's see if she'll give us a piece" he trotted off towards them and the kill, Deston hesitantly followed with a low head, he wasn't looking for trouble with Darkbloods at the moment. "There seems to be quite the gathering of shinlai here....can't you smell them?" Deston questioned the boy, who seemed to have his mind set on the food rather than actually listening.

La Volpe walked carefully through the tall grass, but moved with surprising ease. It wasn't often he didn't have to worry about fallen trees or pesky rocks to trip him up and cause him to fall flat on his face. This savannah was perfect terrain for him, he didn't even need to see to know what it looked like. It was flat and it had a heck of a lot of grass.

A ferocious roar made Volpe stop in his tracks. He lowered himself nearly right against the ground, his belly brushing the hot, cracked earth beneath him. He could only assume it was a shinlai, but probably a nasty one at that. He didn't know of many Lai that would gloat over a kill so enthusiastically. He could tell there was a kill, the metallic scent of blood hung heavy in the air.

"Nothing much, apparently a group of two shinlai seemed to have taken down a rhino"
"With a pair of horns like that....yep, that's Brute alright" he muttered his stomach growled "mm...I wonder if she'll share"

Soft conversation on his right alerted Volpe to a pair of Shinlai on his right. Volpe lowered himself to the ground further, suddenly nervous. How did he happen to stumble upon such a gathering? So many Shinlai at once?

"Brute? Never heard of her."
"She's a Darkblood Elite. "C'mon, let's see if she'll give us a piece."
"There seems to be quite the gathering of shinlai here....can't you smell them?"

Volpe raised his head slightly. A Darkblood Elite...? He knew a good number of names actually but Brute... that name was foreign to him. La Volpe thought it best to stay where he was for now. Followers of Dalia were usually benevolent... Darkbloods were a bit more unpredictable.

Hallow looked around, a sudden swarm of shinlai seemed to be popping up rather quickly. "Something must be going on" He stretched and yawned his large white and black body stiff from his nap. He sat back on his haunches, and watched silently. A few faces he recognized, others were strange and unfamiliar. He watched slightly disgusted as the large shinlai crushed the rhino's skull. "Hopefully all that wasn't just for a trophy kill..."

(WHOA! Yeah seriously guys, try to slow it down a little xD I wasn’t able to get home until late tonight and I’ll have to skim through a lot of this. It’s a good thing nothing is going down yet because that would have been a pain to catch up with lol)

As the warm breeze picked up around him, Marrinus nodded a greeting in Lycuvayu’s direction. His teeth flashed in a smile at the size and bulk of the rhinoceros while Brute stood at the head, her eyes glinting in admiration over the great ivory horn on the animal. The Dark Shinlai paused a good fifty yards from the kill, his grin turning into a callously indignant frown, his chin raised in admonishment as the large female shot a possessive glare in his direction, crushing the skull of the beast in a pointless and distasteful show of strength.

“No need for any vile discrepancy, Brute,” the Darkblood called over, his silver eyes watching her posture and movement for any sign the mammoth Shinlai might charge, “The kill is all yours, I’m not hungry,” he said, turning to start circling about the perimeter of the kill site, his gaze set to scan the encroaching Shinlai on the surrounding landscape for anyone brazen enough to breach its bounds. “Lycu,” he said in a normal tone, knowing the Air Shinlai could hear him on the wind, “Tell this witch I’ll be keeping watch.”

He paused and came to an abrupt halt as a shift in wind alerted him to the presence of another Shinlai that was far too close for comfort. Curling his lip in warning, Marrinus leered off into the tall grass behind him, spotting the orange and black figure of the red-eyed female immediately amongst the brush, recognizing her in an instant from before.

“You have no grounds for being here,” he said, his voice unwaveringly cold. Taking a step towards her, his eyes narrowed at her crouched form, “Now leave before I make you wish you had.”

"He better not touch my horn..." Brute said possessively.

“I don’t think anyone will wan-” He stopped abruptly as the rhino’s head was crushed and the red gunk leaked from its mouth towards his feet. He took a delicate step back curling a lip in distaste at the smell of the gunk. “Pity that would have made a fine trophy.” He said tilting his head to one side.

He looked up and returned Marrinus’s nod. “No need for any vile discrepancy, Brute, the kill is all yours, I’m not hungry.” He called. “Lycu. Tell this witch I’ll be keeping watch.” Came Marrinus’s voice, carried to him by the wind.

Lycu smirked. “Brute, we’ll be keeping watch. Enjoy your prize.” He said, standing up with a stretch.

He watched Marrinus bound away into the long grass and start speaking to someone. He kept an eye on him, but didn’t twist the wind so he could hear. If he needed help, he’d call. Lycu’s orange eyes scanned the scrub, looking at the other Shinlai dotted around. There were many he didn’t know. But he recognised a couple. Nootau, and another were heading his way, Nootau’s eyes fixed on the rhino. He smirked, highly doubting that he’d get any. He scanned the Shinlai next to him, a tall slender blue and white Shinlai, with long white horns sweeping across his back. Close to them he caught the faint movement of another, brown in colour, crouched close to the earth. He tilted his head to one side and sniffed the air. He grinned, baring his teeth. “La Volpe?” He asked himself. “What, is that fox doing here I wonder?” He mused out loud.

Brute grinned and lowered her head to examine the crushed rhino head, "Ew, it's eyes are all bugged out." She laughed and wiped her paw on the ground, shaking off the clumpy, blood soaked dirt that gathered in her toes. She was about to complain about it when a call nearby interupted her.


"No need for any vile discrepancy, Brute," The voice sounded at her, Brute glancing up from her kill to see Marrinus closer than the last time she saw him. "The kill is all yours, I’m not hungry."

Brute flashed her teeth at the Darkblood, "Didn't plan on it." Watching as he circled around her and Lycu, she noticed him say something to him, but couldn't hear. Gah, I hate it when they do that, she thought to herself when Marrinus shot her a glare.

She glanced to Lycu, ready to invite him to his share of the kill, when he stretched and spoke, "Brute, we’ll be keeping watch. Enjoy your prize." Growling, she turned back to look at her kill. She didn't doubt that she couldn't eat the whole thing by herself, she just didn't want to. Raising a paw, she swatted the ivory horn from the rhino and ripped it from its core. Noticing blood on it, she cursed her luck, "Now to find water to clean the blasted thing..."

However, her train of thought was cut short when a breeze carried several other scents to her. Instantly, the water Shinlai perked up and saw Marrinus cornering another Shinlai. In the near distance, she spotted several others making their way to them. To her kill.

Quickly digging up a hole, she buried her horn, and turned to face the oncoming Shinlai. Just who do they think they are? This is my kill, not theirs. The fur on the nape of her neck rose as she growled, baring her glistening fangs at the intruders.

Kayla (now in her 30s) and her two year old bear cub were in the Savannah. They didn't want to be here, it was far too warm for both of them. One of her master's customers wanted some lion's pelts, claws and teeth. The master had sent Kayla out here to collect some, she was being paid greatly for this task.

They were treading across the land in search of some lions, they needed to cross this valley but they kept coming across some cliff edges that they couldn't get down. "Oh darn," Kayla told the cub, "another dead end, looks like we will have to find another way around this cliff." The cub looked up at her, she lay on her stomach and let out a moan. "well I guess its time for a break," she lay her pack down in the shade under a tree, "lets try and stay out of the sun for a while, at least until it cools again. We can resume our hunt in the evening."

Ahalo sat back on his haunches, and watched silently down the valley. Kayla hadn't noticed him nearby until he sat up. "Oh hello there again my friend," she called out to him, "Its been a long time since we have last met." Kayla got up from under her tree and approached him. She stood next to him and followed his gaze down into the valley. "Thats a lot of shinlai down there, any idea whats going on?" she asked him, he didn't seem to be a part of it. She spotted the dead rhino laying between 3 shinlai, two of which are facing something in the long grass rather aggressively.

Hallow smiled when the familiar voice cracked across the arid silence. "Ahh Kayla! Indeed it has been quite a time since we've crossed paths, perhaps too long." He leaned his head close and gave the now tall and strong human he had known from her childhood a soft nuzzle.
"Thats a lot of shinlai down there, any idea whats going on?"

"What they were doing was hunting that poor beast there...as for their reasoning for swarming like locusts I am not quite sure. I only noticed them when I heard the trample of feet upon waking from a nap. To be honest, I don't think you should go down and investigate...something about them puts me on edge..."

Out of simple instinct the fur along the back of his neck bristled slightly as he remembered the cold calculating movement of the largest shinlai and its cohort. He watched as two of them began to eye a smaller one that was crouched in the deep pale grass. He remembered her from a chance encounter, and kept close eye incase she needed help. He refused to stand idly bye should an unfair fight break out.

I think you'd be okay, nothing has happened that really involves your characters. You're making your approach, so just continue :3
